Calculation of Arudha Pada

Updated: Oct 6, 2024

To understand the concept of Arudha Padas in astrology, let’s break it down step by step in simpler terms:

Arudha Padas are specific points in an astrological chart that reflect the tangible or perceivable aspects of a house (bhava). They are used to understand how the qualities of a particular house manifest outwardly in the world.

Steps to Find Arudha Padas:

  1. Begin by identifying the house (bhava) you are interested in, within the specific divisional chart you are analyzing.

  2. Find out which sign the lord (planetary ruler) of that house is placed in, within the same divisional chart.

  3. Count the number of signs from the original house (where the house of interest is located) to the sign where its lord is positioned. Always count in the normal zodiac order.

    • Example: If the house of interest is in Gemini and its lord Mercury is in Aquarius, count from Gemini to Aquarius, which is 9 signs.

  4. Starting from the sign where the lord is positioned, count forward by the same number you found in the previous step. The sign you land on is your tentative Arudha Pada.

    • Example: From Aquarius (where Mercury is), count 9 signs, which lands you in Libra.

  1. Check for Exceptions:

    • If the sign you landed on (in step 4) is either the same as the original house (1st from the house) or directly opposite (7th from the house), then you need to adjust it.

    • Adjustment: Instead of the sign you landed on, take the 10th sign from it as the final Arudha Pada.

    • If it's neither the 1st nor the 7th sign, no adjustment is needed.

  2. The sign you now have is the Arudha Pada for that house. It represents how the characteristics of that house manifest outwardly.

Naming Conventions:

  • Arudha Pada for a specific house is often denoted as "A" followed by the house number. For example:

  • Arudha Pada of the 4th house is A4.

  • Arudha Pada of the 9th house is A9.

  • There are special terms for the Arudha Pada of the 1st house (Lagna):

    • AL (Arudha Lagna)

  • The Arudha Pada of the 12th house is known as:

    • UL (Upapada Lagna)

This process helps astrologers to see how the internal aspects of a house are perceived externally in a person’s life, providing deeper insights into their experiences and behavior.

Note: For signs that have dual rulership (Aquarius and Scorpio), identify the stronger lord between the two (Saturn or Rahu for Aquarius, Mars or Ketu for Scorpio). The strength determination will be discussed separately.
